入围塔林电影节影评人之选竞赛。 　　Masterfully orchestrated – with only a small budget, the setting basically consisting of a table, two chairs, two persons talking, one mysterious manuscript and some little food in-between – this two-men drama reminds me of Robert Bresson’s famous words about filmmaking: “Two types of films: those that employ the resources of the theatre (actors, direction, etc.) and use the camera in order to reproduce, and those that employ the resources of cinematography and use the camera to create. Looks aren't everything, however, and this is no hollow aesthetic exercise. As we follow alienated protagonist Lulu (Marina Shoif) on an impromptu trip into the darkest reaches of her own psyche - seemingly undertaken as a distraction while an unsatisfactory lover labours away on top of her - writer/director Nina Menkes creates a dreamscape of epic imaginative reach. 大平洋戦争末期。目黒にある山田照子の家も勤めのある父栄三を残し、母歌子、妹英子と直子が疎開の準備。だが照子は海軍予備学生として学徒出陣し土浦航空隊にいる恋人伊東敏郎と離れてしまうのが辛かった。二人の願いは戦争終結だけ。硫黄島陥落の頃戦局は急迫、特攻隊の体当り戦法が採られた。敏郎の戦友三島少尉は出撃の日、許婚の写真を敏郎に託し、敵艦に突入、自爆した。ある日、照子は疎開先から敏郎の隊を訪ね、戦友秋田少尉の計いで二人は海岸で話し合う。死んで行く身で彼女を拘束したくないという敏郎に、一日でもよいから妻にと照子は泣く。やがて簡素な結婚式が行われ、月二度の外出日にお互の無事を確かめ合う新婚生活が続いた。間もなく敏郎は三重県へ転属。面会も許可されぬ照子は不安に襲われる。ある夜、急病で倒れた秋田に代り、敏郎が出撃することになる。彼はガソリンタンクの被弾で基地に戻るが分隊長に面罵され、翌朝再び秋田らと出撃を命令される。敏郎は最後の外出で照子一家を訪れたが明日の出撃を口にだせない。だが照子は懐中の遺書をみつけ、彼のあとを追う決心を固める。翌朝、敏郎と駅頭で永遠の別れを告げた照子は、帰宅して最後の日記をしたためた上、薬をのんだ。帰隊途中で爆撃を受けた敏郎は、よろめきつつも照子の部屋に辿りつき、その死顔に号泣した。彼は照子の横に寝て拳銃をとり出す。やがて敵機の轟音が響く中に発射音が聞えた。
